coaching FAQS

What is coaching?

COACHING INHERENTLY ASSUMES THAT THE CLIENT HAS ALL THE ANSWERS INSIDE OF THEMSELVES. IT'S THE COACH'S JOB TO PARTNER WITH THE CLIENT IN A CREATIVE PROCESS TO DRAW OUT THOSE ANSWERS THROUGH HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERED LISTENING AND POWERFUL QUESTIONS.

Coaching is not...

  • Counseling, consulting or mentoring

  • Only for executives or professionals

  • Advice-lending or “hand-holding” accountability

  • A “friend for hire”

  • A substitute for mental health, legal or other professional treatment/services

What's the difference between COACHING and COUNSELING?

This question, is one of the most frequently asked questions we receive. Although many would think that there are few differences between them, there are actually many. To make the distinctions clear, we’ve listed them as a comparison below:

In Coaching…

  • The starting point is mental and emotional health

  • Questions are meant to promote discovery

  • The focus is on the present and future

  • The result is intentional action

In Counseling…

  • The starting point is mental and emotional trauma

  • Questions are meant to diagnose

  • The focus is on the past and present

  • The result is understanding and acceptance

WHat is ENNEAGRAM COACHING?

Enneagram coaching is taking the coaching concepts and applying them to an Enneagram framework. Enneagram coaching is centered around Enneagram-related concepts such as personal growth within your type, relationships, discerning your type, maximizing your type's strengths and gifts within your work, etc.

WHAT'S THE ICF?

As resourced from the ICF website, "the International Coach Federation (ICF) is the leading global organization dedicated to advancing the coaching profession by setting high standards, providing independent certification and building a worldwide network of trained coaching professionals. ICF Credentials are awarded to professional coaches who have met stringent education and experience requirements and have demonstrated a thorough understanding of the coaching competencies that set the standard in the profession. Achieving credentials through ICF signifies a coach’s commitment to integrity, understanding and mastery of coaching skills, and dedication to clients."

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A COACH?

To become a credible and professionally trained coach, one needs to be trained through an accredited coach training program. There are many coach training programs all over the world (both accredited and not accredited) with different focuses and methods of teaching. At Enneagram Us, our training comes from Western Seminary (link), an accredited coach training program which uses a Christian lens and/or worldview as a framework in both their material and teaching.

As graduates of Western Seminary's Certificate in Transformational Coaching program, we are not trained to be only Christian Coaches. Rather, we are trained to coach in any and every setting with any individual and background. With Western's Christian perspective to the coaching process we are equipped to listen, ask, and lead with the help of the Holy Spirit - to coach the person as a whole, not just their problem

WHAT HAPPENS IN A COACHING SESSION?

DO YOU GIVE ADVICE?

The simple answer is no. As coaches, we believe that the client is the expert of his/her life and have the answers they need within themselves. Our job is to help the client come to awareness through powerful questions and powerful listening.
